Prime Minister Calls for Calm

The Cenotaph war memorial in London will be protected by a 24-hour police guard for the first time during this weekend's remembrance commemorations. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has appealed for calm, urging everyone to "stand together in quiet reflection" and honor the selfless bravery of the armed forces.

Tensions Expected with Protests

Despite the calls for calm, the police have warned of "pockets of confrontation" between extreme right-wing groups and pro-Palestine demonstrators. Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered in Trafalgar Square last week, and there are concerns that clashes may occur during the remembrance events.

Veterans Advised Not to Wear Medals

Military officials have advised veterans not to wear their medals or berets when attending Remembrance services to honor the 1.3 million servicemen and women killed in action since 1914. The police will be working to keep the factions away from each other to prevent serious disorder.

Massive Policing Operation

Over 1,000 police officers from across the country are being drafted in to assist the 2,000 Metropolitan officers at the Armistice Day march and Remembrance Sunday event in Whitehall. The Met's deputy assistant commissioner has warned troublemakers that there will be a zero tolerance policy, and anyone chanting "Jihad" could face arrest.

Cenotaph Under 24-Hour Protection

The national Cenotaph memorial in Whitehall has been placed under 24-hour police protection. Steel barriers have been erected, and pro-Palestine protesters are banned from going near the memorial until after the Remembrance Sunday event. This comes after the defacing of the Cenotaph memorial in Rochdale earlier this week.

Prime Minister Reassures Public

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has reassured the public that the police are taking all steps to ensure Remembrance services are safeguarded from any protests. He emphasized that protests will only be permitted far away from Remembrance events, and the Cenotaph will be guarded around the clock to protect it for those paying their respects.

Strict Conditions for Pro-Palestine March

Strict conditions have been applied to the Palestine Solidarity Campaign march, with protesters not allowed to deviate from the route and specifically excluded from the Whitehall area. Specialist officers will also be tracking hate convoys planning to pass through Jewish communities and shouting anti-Semitic abuse.

Poppies Rescue World War Two Veteran

A World War Two veteran, Private Harry Birdsall, has received help from the Royal British Legion's annual poppy appeal. Funds raised have paid for a stairlift and a hospital-style orthopaedic bed to be installed at his home in Wakefield. Private Birdsall, who ferried Jewish survivors from Hitler's concentration camps, has spent the last four years sleeping in a chair because he was too frail to climb the stairs.
