Strict Rules Ignored

Labour has sounded the alarm on the sale of vapes containing nicotine to children, in violation of regulations. The government is facing criticism for its lack of action in addressing the growing number of young people addicted to vaping. Shocking figures reveal that illegal vape sales are rampant across the country.

Government Response Under Scrutiny

In response to a question from Labour, ministers admitted that 50% of UK councils have reported instances of cigarettes or tobacco products being sold to minors. Even more concerning, tests conducted last year showed that over 25% of stores sold vapes illegally when they shouldn't have.

Deceptive Marketing

Current regulations allow retailers to sell "nicotine-free" vapes to those under 18 and distribute free samples regardless of age. However, a study by Inter Scientific has exposed the truth, revealing that 35% of e-cigarettes marketed as "0% nicotine" actually contain nicotine.

Alarming Increase in Youth Vaping

Labour's analysis shows that since 2021, the number of young people who regularly use e-cigs has tripled, with nearly 140,000 more children now vaping. Shadow Health Minister Preet Kaur Gill criticized the government for failing to address this issue and accused the vaping industry of targeting kids.

Government's Response

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care assured that the government is taking action to combat youth vaping. They emphasized the importance of not vaping if one doesn't smoke and reiterated that children should never vape. The upcoming Tobacco and Vapes Bill aims to create a smoke-free generation and address the problem of youth vaping. The government is also investing additional funds in enforcement agencies and Trading Standards to tackle illegal and underage vape sales.
