Recent data from the Ministry of Justice reveals a concerning trend in the criminal justice system — courts are becoming increasingly lenient towards teen knife offenders. The number of teenagers being jailed for a first offense has dropped by nearly half nationwide.

Students Expelled and Suspended for Weapons in School

Furthermore, the figures show a worrying rise in student violence, with 541 children expelled for brandishing weapons in class in the year leading up to July 2021. An additional 7,763 students were suspended due to similar incidents.

Decline in Custodial Sentences

Between March 2020 and March 2021, the proportion of ten to 17-year-old knife offenders receiving custodial sentences plummeted from ten percent to six percent. However, there has been a significant surge in the use of community sentences for 16 and 17-year-olds involved in knife crimes.

The Ministry of Justice emphasized that they have implemented tougher laws to punish knife-carrying offenders. Tory MP Tim Loughton emphasized the importance of ensuring young people understand the seriousness of engaging in knife crime.

On the other hand, Shabana Mahmood MP stated that these statistics reveal the magnitude of the crisis within the criminal justice system and criticized the Conservative party for their failure to effectively combat knife crime. Labour's proposed action plan includes increasing local policing, enforcing stronger measures, and providing new youth mentors to stem the rise of youth violence and ultimately halve knife crime.
