Chancellor's Budget Address

Despite nearly ten million people out of work in Britain, experts have warned that the migrant population is set to increase by 315,000 each year. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt emphasized the need to prioritize hiring Britons over foreign labor in yesterday's Budget announcement.

Long-Term Net Migration Forecasts Revised Up

The Office for Budget Responsibility has revised up long-term net migration forecasts from 240,000 to 315,000 annually from 2028 onwards. Last year, the figure stood at 672,000, equivalent to the population of a city like Doncaster arriving each year.

Job Vacancies and Challenges

With around 900,000 job vacancies in the country, measures to encourage those on benefits to work were highlighted, including the expansion of free childcare. However, freezes to tax thresholds were flagged as a barrier, affecting 2.7 million potential workers.

Concerns Over Impact

Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman expressed concerns about the economic impact of increased migration, while Alp Mehmet from Migration Watch warned of added pressure on services and housing. The issue of immigration's impact on the economy and society remains a point of contention.

Political Promises vs. Reality

Former PM David Cameron and current PM Boris Johnson had made promises to reduce net migration, but the latest forecasts indicate a different trajectory. The debate continues on the effects of immigration on the UK.
