Suspension and Investigation

Former Labour MP Nick Brown, who was suspended from the party in September 2022, has confirmed that he will not stand at the next general election. Brown, a former chief whip, had his whip removed and was put under investigation. However, party officials have not disclosed the details of the suspension or when the investigation will conclude.

Resignation from Labour

Today, Brown announced that he is also quitting the Labour party with a "heavy heart." He criticized the party's complaints process, calling it "fundamentally, and inexcusably, flawed."

Long Political Career

Brown, who represents Newcastle upon Tyne East, served as chief whip for every Labour leader from Tony Blair onwards. At 72, he is one of the party's longest-serving politicians.

Ongoing Investigation

When his suspension was first announced, Brown stated that he was fully cooperating with the investigation and was not aware of the specific complaint against him. The Labour party has emphasized its commitment to treating all complaints seriously and ensuring a fair and impartial process.

Despite his suspension, Brown continues to receive a taxpayer-funded salary of £86,584.
