Tens of Thousands of Pounds Allocated for Vehicles and Drones

France has utilized funds from the UK to enhance its border security with Italy, which is located 560 miles away from the Channel. A portion of the £46.5 million provided was allocated for the purchase of vehicles and drones to safeguard the frontier.

Equipment Takes Priority Over Manpower

Instead of focusing on increasing manpower, the French government opted to invest heavily in equipment, including office supplies, microwaves, vacuum cleaners, e-scooters, and quad bikes. Moreover, £130,000 was allocated for new riding boots, helmets, and gear for a mounted border unit.

UK Taxpayers' Contribution Makes Up a Significant Portion of France's Border Budget

Documents confirm that a division of the French force responsible for stopping arrivals at the country's southeastern border received financial support from UK taxpayers. This year, British contributions are expected to make up approximately one-tenth of France's entire border budget.

Sandhurst Treaty Plays a Role

These substantial funds were provided to France as part of the 2018 Sandhurst Treaty, a result of negotiations between former UK Prime Minister Theresa May and President Emmanuel Macron. The treaty aims to strengthen cooperation on security matters between the two nations.

Investing in the Italian Border Makes Sense
