Less than half of Home Office headquarters staff were present at their desks last week, sparking outrage amid the ongoing migration crisis.
Empty Desks at the Home Office
According to reports, the Home Office had the lowest occupancy rate among all government departments, with only 47% of desks occupied.
In comparison, the Cabinet Office had 89% of their workstations manned, while the Ministry of Defence had 86%.
Mandate to Return to the Office
Last year, in an effort to address the prevalence of remote work, the Home Office issued a mandate requiring officials to spend a minimum of 60% of their time working from the office.
The directive emphasized the importance of collaboration, innovation, and fostering a sense of community within Whitehall.
Call for Civil Servants to Return
John O’Connell, spokesperson for the TaxPayers’ Alliance, expressed the need for civil servants to return to the office.
He stated, "Bureaucrats in pyjamas need a reality check. Too many departments remain empty while performance continues to decline."
Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg echoed this sentiment, suggesting that increased in-office presence could improve the Home Office's ability to address the issue of illegal migration.
Home Office Responds
A spokesperson for the Home Office commented on the low occupancy rate at their headquarters, stating, "This data specifically refers to staff at 2 Marsham St, where less than ten percent of Home Office employees are located."
