Simon Smith, Convicted Triple Baby Killer, Set to Walk Free From Jail

The Justice Secretary has suffered a major defeat in his bid to keep Simon Smith, a triple baby killer, behind bars. Smith, who was sentenced to three life sentences in 1996 for the murders of his three children, will now be released from prison after the Parole Board ruled that he is unlikely to pose a threat to the public.

Smith's Gruesome Crimes

Smith suffocated his three-month-old daughter, Lauren, in 1994. A subsequent police investigation revealed that he had also murdered his two other children in separate incidents. The deaths of his other children, who were born to a previous partner and had been treated as cot deaths, were brought to light following Lauren's murder.

Fight for Reconsideration

In an effort to overturn the Parole Board's decision to release Smith, Justice Secretary Alex Chalk submitted an application for reconsideration. Chalk argued that Smith had not accepted responsibility for two of the three murders and questioned his honesty and suitability for release. However, a judge ruled in December that it was unlikely Smith would find himself in a similar situation again and therefore posed a minimal risk to young children.

Heartache and Anger

Lauren's mother, Rachel Playfair, expressed her deep disappointment and fear at the prospect of Smith's release. She called him "pure evil" and emphasized that he had served less than 10 years for each life he took. Playfair lamented the fact that in the 90s, when the crimes were committed, life sentences were not as stringent as they are now.

Strict License Conditions

While Smith prepares to walk free, the Ministry of Justice has assured the public that he will face strict license conditions. Any violation of these conditions could result in his swift return to prison. Furthermore, the government has recently extended whole life orders to include child killers, ensuring that offenders like Smith will spend the rest of their lives behind bars without the possibility of parole.
