Cabinet Minister Calls for Unity

Kemi Badenoch has criticized Tory plotters who are attempting to remove Rishi Sunak from his position, while also leaving the door open for her own potential leadership bid. The Trade Secretary demanded that rebels "stop messing around" and urged those who were mentioning her name as a possible Premier to cease "stirring the pot."

No Time for Westminster Gossip

Badenoch firmly stated that the majority of people in the country are not interested in the internal drama of Westminster. She emphasized that those who were promoting her as a potential leader were not her friends and did not genuinely care about her or her family. Speaking to Sky News, she called out their actions as mere attempts to create unnecessary controversy.

Leadership Ambitions

Although Badenoch did not deny having aspirations for the top job, she highlighted that her previous bid for leadership in 2022, following Boris Johnson's departure, was unsuccessful. After Liz Truss won the contest, Badenoch publicly supported Sunak for the role, praising his economic expertise and stating that she would not run again. However, she acknowledged that things can change in politics and did not rule out the possibility of stepping up if a vacancy arises.

Chastising a Fellow Tory

Badenoch revealed that she had a phone conversation with Sir Simon Clarke after he publicly claimed that the Tories would face an electoral "massacre" if Sunak remained in power. During the heated call, she questioned his motives and stressed the importance of not airing internal party disagreements in public.

Tories Nervous about Polls

Despite senior Tories such as Priti Patel, Liam Fox, and David Davis rallying behind Sunak, there is growing concern within the party about Labour's 23-point lead in the polls. With an election expected in the second half of the year, a recent survey commissioned by the Conservative Britain Alliance has raised alarms, suggesting that the Tories could be heading for an election wipe-out similar to that of 1997.
