Children would no longer have access to irreversible cross-sex hormones under a new plan put forth by Liz Truss, the former Prime Minister. Truss believes that young people need to be better protected from making changes to their bodies that they may later regret.
New Restrictions on Hormone Treatment
Currently, teenagers aged 16 and above can receive cross-sex hormones after being on puberty blockers for a year. However, these hormones can lead to irreversible changes, including breast development, a deeper voice, and infertility, as stated by the NHS.
Under Truss' proposed plan, teenagers would be prohibited from accessing hormone treatment until they turn 18. This measure aims to ensure that young people have more time to consider the long-term implications of such treatments.
Protecting Under-18s and Single-Sex Spaces
In addition to the restrictions on hormone treatment, Truss's plan also seeks to prevent the state from officially recognizing social transitioning in individuals under the age of 18. The proposal also aims to safeguard single-sex spaces.
The South West Norfolk MP plans to present her bill to the Commons on Wednesday and hopes for cross-party support.
Consultation on Puberty Blockers
A spokesperson for the government stated that the NHS is currently consulting on limiting the prescription of puberty blockers. This move aligns with Truss's efforts to ensure that young people are provided with proper safeguards and information when making decisions about their bodies.
