Groups flagged under new definition

Communities Secretary Michael Gove has introduced a new definition of extremism, targeting radical Islamists and far-right individuals. The Muslim Association of Britain, Cage, MEND, British National Socialist Movement, and Patriotic Alternative are among those potentially affected.

Protection for free speech

Gove reassured eco protestors, trans activists, and gender critical campaigners that their free speech rights will be safeguarded. However, the definition will not cover racist remarks made by millionaire Tory donor Frank Hester.

New measures and consequences

Individuals promoting violence, hatred, or intolerance with the goal of undermining fundamental rights will face restrictions. Those linked to such groups will be barred from receiving honors and public appointments.

Counter-extremism efforts

The new definition is part of efforts to strengthen counter-radicalization work and address extremist activity online and offline. A new Whitehall counter-extremism center will oversee the implementation and application of the definition across government departments.

Rising hate incidents

Reports of anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim incidents have surged, prompting concerns among the public. Polling shows significant worries about Islamist and far-right extremism, with calls for tougher measures against demonstrators.

Call for evidence-based approach

Brendan Cox, co-founder of the Together Coalition, emphasized the importance of independent oversight for the new counter-extremism center to ensure an evidence-based, non-ideological approach.
