Record Number of Fatcats Rake in Big Bucks

Over 3,000 town hall executives took home six-figure salaries in 2023, marking the highest number in almost a decade. Research revealed that at least 175 local authority bureaucrats earned over £200,000, sparking criticism amid rising taxes and strained services.

Highest Earners and Controversy

The annual Town Hall Rich List by the TaxPayers’ Alliance showed that 3,106 staff earned more than £100,000, with 829 making over £150,000 and 557 surpassing the Prime Minister's salary of £165,000. The top earner, Felicity Roe from Hampshire Council, received £651,158 including pension and compensation upon departure.

Response and Justification

While Westminster Council had the most employees earning six-figure sums at 60, critics questioned the allocation of funds as taxes rise and services face cuts. The TaxPayers’ Alliance chief raised concerns about the impact on frontline services, prompting responses from the councils involved.

Westminster Council defended their salary structure, stating that the pay reflects the necessary skills to lead the authority, while Hampshire Council clarified that Ms. Roe's position was eliminated as part of a restructuring process.
