The UK government has announced new measures to prevent woke activists from tearing down statues as part of a common-sense approach to safeguarding historical monuments. Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer revealed the new rules in an effort to preserve the nation's history from being erased. In recent years, statues of figures with controversial pasts have become targets for protesters.

Protecting history while promoting understanding

The new rules will stipulate that statues should be kept in their original form as a default position. However, they will also allow for complementary historical explanations, based on factual information rather than emotional sentiment. The guidelines, to be published in the next two weeks, seek to prevent knee-jerk removals and ensure a balanced approach. Frazer hopes the "retain and explain" initiative will shield those responsible for statues from undue pressure to take them down.

Defending our culture and values

Speaking at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester, Frazer emphasized her refusal to be ashamed of the UK's culture, its people, or its past. She stated her opposition to the removal of statues and monuments, expressing belief in the importance of understanding and learning from history. Frazer described concerns about culture wars as a necessary defense of British principles, such as pride, tolerance, respect, fairness, and common sense.

Frazer concluded her address by sharing her intention to publish new guidance on "retain and explain" for statues. The aim of this guidance is to promote understanding of history and discourage its erasure.
