Startling statistics show that Parliament has been plagued by over 1,000 reports of rats and other vermin in the past three years. The pest control team at the Commons was called a staggering 541 times last year, dwarfing the 412 incidents in 2022 and 227 in 2021.

Dedicated expert tackles rodent infestation

Parliament has a dedicated expert on-site to tackle the nuisance rodents that infest the iconic Gothic Palace of Westminster. The figures were revealed in response to a parliamentary question by Lib Dem MP Sarah Olney.

Plumbing and mechanical issues add to MPs' troubles

The data also sheds light on the numerous on-site issues that MPs have to contend with in their day-to-day work. Since 2021, there have been a staggering 11,182 plumbing problems reported across Parliament, with 5,211 of those occurring last year alone. Additionally, there have been 2,002 mechanical incidents related to lifts across the Estate during the same period.

"The heart of British democracy must be safe"

Lib Dem Treasury spokesperson Sarah Olney expressed concern over the situation, stating, "With the number of leaks from this conservative government, people often say they smell a rat in Parliament. Now we know it's literally true. The Palace of Westminster is the heart of British democracy, and it is crucial that action is taken to ensure it remains a safe place to work as quickly as possible."
