A PEER has complained of sarnies in a taxpayer-subsidised House of Lords bar being worse than in a petrol station.

The Lord emailed catering chiefs to say recent changes to the range of food on offer at historic Bishop’s Bar were “disastrous.”

He grumbled that smoked salmon portions were too small, there was too much lettuce and the choice of sandwich fillings had been greatly reduced.

He also moaned about toasted sandwiches being taken off the menu.

The Lord said the current offering left “much to be desired”.

He added: “They are certainly far less attractive than the M&S range at BP petrol stations.

“I recently had a salad with one modest slice of smoked salmon in some plastic container priced at just over £7.

“Why have toasted sandwiches been stopped? Why so much lettuce?”

The bar needed a £77,000 subsidy from the taxpayer to keep running — for peers who get a £313 daily attendance payment.

Harry Fone, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “While I don’t begrudge members a decent meal, the taxpayer should not be expected to help pay for it.

“Money should be going to frontline services not on lunches for well-paid politicians.”
