Proposed Bill Omitted from Rishi Sunak's King's Speech

The UK government's plans to ban trans and gay conversion therapy have been met with opposition from furious Tory MPs. Chancellor Rishi Sunak has decided not to include the proposed legislation in his King's Speech next month, according to sources.

Over 40 Tory MPs Demand Abandonment of New Law

Over 40 Tory MPs have signed a letter to the Prime Minister, urging him to scrap the plans for the new law. The Bill would have prohibited institutions from providing conversion 'therapy' that claims to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. However, MPs argue that the legislation may inadvertently criminalize parents and teachers for expressing their views on gender to their children.

Draft Bill and Pre-Legislative Scrutiny to Delay Law

The Prime Minister intends to delay the legislation by publishing a draft Bill and seeking input from MPs through a process known as pre-legislative scrutiny. This strategy is expected to prolong the timeline, with the law not becoming effective until after the upcoming winter election.

Tory MPs Express Concerns

Tory MP Miriam Cates has voiced her opposition to the ban, citing concerns about the potential criminalization of individuals for discussing gender issues with their children. MPs from the New Conservative group and the Common Sense Group, including some with government positions, have also signed the letter expressing their opposition to the ban.

One Tory MP stated, "Under no circumstances am I ever voting for a conversion therapy ban – ever. Rishi will face a massive revolt if he tries to push this through."

Downing Street has declined to comment on the contents of the King's Speech.
