A new generation of extremists, reportedly supported by the Pakistani political party Tehreek-e-Labbaik, is gaining influence in the UK. The late founder of the party, Khadim Rizvi, had a history of inciting violence against those accused of blasphemy.

Blasphemy flashpoints

The report points out three recent incidents, including protests outside a school in Batley in 2021 over an alleged depiction of the prophet Mohammed. The teacher involved received death threats and had to go into hiding.

Defending freedom of speech

Counter-extremism tsar Robin Simcox emphasized the importance of protecting freedom of speech in the face of those trying to impose blasphemy laws. He stressed the need to address controversial topics openly to make progress.

New measures against extremism

Ministers are set to introduce a new definition of extremism to tackle individuals who undermine British values. Security Minister Tom Tugendhat dismissed accusations of politicizing the issue, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the community from radicalization.
