Rishi Sunak has strongly criticized the "vitriolic hatred" exhibited by Islamic extremists that has led veteran Tory minister Mike Freer to announce his resignation from politics. A spokesperson from No10 described the violent threats against Freer as an "attack on British democracy."

Concerns for safety prompt decision to quit

Mike Freer, the Member of Parliament for Finchley and Golders Green, the UK's largest Jewish constituency, revealed last night that he will step down at the next general election. The 63-year-old said he considers himself "lucky to be alive" after an apparent arson attack on his office in December. Freer expressed the weight that the "attacks by Muslims Against Crusades… and the recent arson attack" have had on him and his husband.

MPs should be protected, says Commons Leader

Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt lamented the fact that MPs are being forced out of office due to safety concerns, calling it an "absolute tragedy." She pointed out that social media often plays a role in encouraging the demonization and dehumanization of Members of Parliament, which can lead to serious physical harm. Mordaunt emphasized that regardless of one's political views, MPs deserve respect and protection for their service to the public.

Speaker vows to improve MP safety

Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle pledged to do everything in his power to enhance the safety of MPs. While acknowledging that death threats are unfortunately common for politicians, Hoyle recognized that Freer has been specifically targeted. The Board of Deputies of British Jews praised Freer as a steadfast supporter of the Jewish community and expressed concern over the threats and abuse he has faced.
