Rishi Sunak, the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, is clashing with left-wing critics who oppose his new trans guidance for schools. The guidelines, which were recently released, emphasize that teachers should only allow children to identify as a different gender in "extremely rare" cases and with parental consultation.
Key Details of the Trans Guidance
The long-awaited rules outline several criteria that must be met before granting a child's request to socially transition. These include ensuring that the child has not been peer pressured and considering the impact on fellow students. The guidance also advises caution when dealing with primary school children questioning their gender, as they are deemed more vulnerable.
The guidelines also state that wearing the uniform of the opposite sex is not allowed, including swimwear.
Response from Ministers and Critics
Government ministers have praised the trans guidance as a "sea change" approach that protects school staff from the influence of activists. However, it has faced criticism from Labour MPs, union leaders, and campaigners.
Stonewall, a controversial charity, labeled the guidance "actively dangerous" and claimed it would have a chilling effect comparable to the historic ban on promoting homosexuality. Labour MP Kate Osborne called the guidance "cruel and unworkable" and urged teachers to disregard it.
The National Education Union boss, Daniel Kebede, stated that schools do not need to change their current policies while a 12-week consultation takes place. This contradicts Downing Street's instruction for immediate compliance.
Government's Position and Clarifications
Education Secretary Gillian Keegan insisted that the guidance removes any confusion regarding the protections required for biological sex and single-sex spaces. Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch added that schools are not obligated to accept a child's request for social transition and that teachers and students should not be pressured to use different pronouns.
The Department for Education stated that social transition should be extremely rare in practice, and if a child does transition, there is no requirement for others to use their new pronouns.
In terms of uniform, gender-questioning children should generally adhere to the same standards as other children of their sex. However, schools may make changes or exceptions for most uniform items on certain occasions, excluding swimwear.
Gender-questioning students should not participate in sports with the opposite sex if it compromises safety or fairness.
Single-sex spaces such as toilets and changing rooms, based on biology, must be provided by schools.
Opposition from Tory MPs
Some Conservative MPs, led by Liz Truss, have expressed dissatisfaction with the guidance, claiming that it does not go far enough. Truss argued that loopholes in the guidance and existing laws could be exploited, potentially putting children at risk and insufficiently protecting single-sex spaces.
