Under his plans, schools will be ordered to open up after class so communities can use their footie pitches and gyms.

For the first time, the teaching watchdog Ofsted will assess schools on how good their PE lessons are.

He will also seize on the Euros women’s footie mania sweeping the nation to launch a review into female participation in sport.

It will look at adding more women’s sports to the ‘crown jewels’ so they are shown on normal telly – beefing up those who watch it.

All options will be looked at to get more women and girls into sport.

He will also protect “female only” competitions – backing swimming’s ban on trans athletes taking part in women events.

In a letter to Five of Britain’s biggest sports groups, Rishi said: “Sport is an export success story for Britain and a significant driver of economic growth.

“As Chancellor, I supported major sporting events including funding for the game-changing Euros we are hosting now.

“We must make the most of these opportunities as we strike out into the world to seize the opportunities of Brexit.

“If I’m Prime Minister, I will therefore ask ministers to work with you, with event organisers and with the Department for Trade to support major sporting events and make the most of the fantastic trade and business opportunities around them.”

He also issued a good luck message to England’s Lionesses – who are squaring off against Sweden in the semi final tonight.
