London Mayor Sadiq Khan joins a quarter of Labour MPs in breaking ranks with party leader Sir Keir Starmer

The Labour Party's internal conflict over Israel has intensified as Sadiq Khan defied Sir Keir Starmer and called for a ceasefire. Khan, the Mayor of London, became the most high-profile Labour politician to support ceasefire calls, joining a quarter of the party's MPs who have signed a Commons motion demanding a "cessation of hostilities" and condemning Israel's actions. Starmer has faced backlash, particularly from Muslim members, for not demanding a full-on ceasefire and instead advocating for a humanitarian truce to allow aid into Gaza.

Sir Keir Starmer's authority challenged as infighting escalates

Starmer's authority within the party was further challenged as Khan's intervention sparked more infighting. Labour peer Ian Austin criticized Khan for weighing in on the conflict, stating that Khan couldn't stop violence on the streets of London but believes he can offer advice on such a complicated issue. The internal conflict within the Labour Party has highlighted divisions over how to approach the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Labour MPs divided on the issue

Last night, the Commons motion calling for a ceasefire, organized by left-wing members, was supported by shadow minister Imran Hussain and signed by almost one in four Labour MPs. The motion condemns Israel for "collective punishment" on Palestinians and calls for a cessation of hostilities. However, some Labour MPs, like shadow environment secretary Steve Reed, have argued against a ceasefire, stating that Israel has the right to self-defense after suffering a terrorist attack and that Hamas must be dismantled to prevent future attacks.
