Resignation of Scott Benton

Scott Benton, a former Conservative Member of Parliament representing Blackpool South, has announced his resignation, triggering another by-election. Benton stated that stepping down was a tough decision but called it the "honour of a lifetime" to serve his constituency.

Reasons for Resignation

Benton faced a recall petition following a 35-day suspension from the Commons. The suspension was approved after he was found to have breached parliamentary rules by offering to lobby for gambling investors. Despite appealing the decision, an independent panel confirmed no procedural errors.

Upcoming By-Election

The Conservative Party will defend a narrow majority of 3,690 votes over Labour in Blackpool South. This by-election will mark the fourth such vote this year and could potentially be the 11th seat lost by the Government since 2019.
