Increasing Dependence

Tens of thousands of our nation's heroes, including both serving soldiers and veterans, are having to rely on benefits just to make ends meet, according to recent figures. As of July 2023, there were 4,000 active service members and 52,000 veterans relying on Universal Credit.

Tip of the Iceberg

However, the Labour party suggests that these figures might just be the tip of the iceberg, as they only cover 66% of the actual number affected. This marks a stark increase from July 2022, when 3,000 serving personnel and 38,600 veterans reported receiving Universal Credit.

Possible Impact

Based on the understanding that the current figures only represent two-thirds of the total affected group, Labour estimates that up to 80,000 veterans and 6,000 service personnel could be reliant on the welfare system. This highlights the significant impact on those who have served our country.

Labour's Response

Shadow Veterans Minister Steve McCabe expressed concern over the situation, stating that veterans and their families should not have to rely on benefits or charitable support to get by. He criticized the Conservative government for creating a "postcode lottery for veterans" and pledged that Labour would fully incorporate the Armed Forces Covenant into law if elected.

Government's Commitment

In response, a government spokesperson emphasized their commitment to helping veterans successfully transition from military to civilian life. They highlighted the high employment rate among veterans and the various support measures in place for serving personnel, including pay increases and childcare subsidies.

It is clear that more needs to be done to support our soldiers and veterans, ensuring they receive the assistance they deserve after their service to our country.
