Mr Davis, who qualified for the elite Special Forces’ reserves unit 50 years ago, was leaving a Chinese restaurant on Tuesday evening.
He said he saw two men "kicking seven bells" out of another man on the ground.
A True Act of Heroism
The victim, identified only as Gareth, had been set on by two drug-addled thugs in Westminster.
Mr Davis, 74, stepped in to drive the attackers away, standing his ground as they threatened to "fill him in".
One witness said it was "a true act of heroism".
Former Brexit Secretary Mr Davis said last night his only concern was "getting Gareth out of risk" and that the incident was over in less than two minutes.
Intimidate, Not Be Intimidated
He said: "About 35 years ago, somebody got kicked in the head and he died.
"Ever since, if I see something like that happening, I intervene."
When asked if he had needed to use his SAS training, Mr Davis said: "Only to stop them from hitting me, really.
"I'm not always so successful when following my rule. I have broken my nose and a few teeth in the past, but this time it was OK.
"The important thing is to intimidate rather than be intimidated."
A Helping Hand
Speaking about Gareth, Mr Davis said: "I gave him a sofa for the night and took him to A&E this morning.
"He was still bleeding. It's fortunately nothing permanent other than a few scars, I think.
"It was messy, but he's all right. He's still alive and that's the important thing."
Guto Harri, Boris Johnson's former spin-doctor, had been dining with Mr Davis and said his actions had almost certainly saved Gareth's life.
He said: "If he hadn't stepped in, heavens knows what might have happened.
"They were really going for the poor guy."
He described Mr Davis as "pure Action Man".
