Government Plans to Rein in Council Spending

Town hall executives earning over £100,000 may have their salaries put to a vote, according to new government proposals. Michael Gove, the Levelling Up Secretary, wants to curb excessive pay in local government and ensure that taxpayer funds are used effectively. The plans would require elected councillors to approve any pay packages exceeding £100,000. The move comes as many councils face financial strain and residents prepare for council tax hikes.

Over 2,700 Employees Earning Six-Figure Salaries

According to the TaxPayers’ Alliance's Town Hall Rich List, there are at least 2,759 employees in England and Wales earning more than £100,000 in total remuneration. Westminster Council has the highest number of six-figure earners, with 50 staff members on the list. The government's proposals aim to bring greater transparency to local government salaries and prevent excessive pay without proper oversight.

Step in the Right Direction

Government sources have expressed concern over inflated salaries in local government and the need for taxpayer protection. While attracting top talent is important, there is a call for transparency and democratic checks on council spending. John O’Connell, CEO of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, welcomed the proposals as a positive step towards controlling executive pay in councils and ensuring democratic oversight.
