Immigration Minister Announces Cap on Refugee Intake

An annual cap on refugees allowed into Britain will be implemented to ease pressure on housing and public services. The number of refugees admitted legally will be determined based on the capacity of local councils.

Illegal Arrivals Stretching Resources to Breaking Point

Councils, which are responsible for providing homes and support, are struggling to cope with the influx of illegal arrivals. The strain on housing and services has become unsustainable.

Immigration Minister's Statement

Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick stated that the high number of people making dangerous and unnecessary small boat crossings is overwhelming housing and services in the UK. The cap on safe and legal routes will be part of the Illegal Migration Act, ensuring that the number of refugees admitted aligns with the capacity of public services and communities to support and integrate them.

Implementation and Updates

The cap will be introduced in January 2025 and will be revised annually, taking into account any humanitarian crises. However, refugees covered by schemes to help relocate individuals from Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong will not be included in the cap.

Government Accused of Shifting Responsibility to Underfunded Councils

Critics argue that the government is passing the burden of limiting refugee numbers to financially strained councils. Enver Solomon from the Refugee Council highlighted the lack of safe routes for those fleeing persecution and terror.

Policy Exchange Report's Recommendation

Even a Policy Exchange report, which proposed a cap, suggests that it should only come into effect when illegal arrivals fall below 10,000 per year.
