The EU Parliament is voting on rules to bar meat-inspired names.

Burgers could become “veggie discs” and sausages “vegan tubes”.

Critics called it a waste of time and money.

But it is supported by the meat industry.

Nick Allen, of the British Meat Processors Association said: “I think they’re deliberately misleading the consumer.”

He said the problem was less with terms like veggie burger and more with products labelled as “meat free” pork and chicken.

Jasmijn De Boo, vice-president of campaign group Pro Veg, said: “There’s no confusion whatsoever. Consumers clearly know what they’re buying.”

Jytte Guteland, a Socialist MEP from Sweden, said a crackdown on veggie products would be “bad for consumers and the climate”.

A compromise solution could see long-standing veggie labels like burger and sausage allowed as long as packaging makes clear they contain no meat.

Any decision will need to be negotiated with EU capitals as part of wider plans to reform the bloc’s controversial Common Agricultural Policy.
