THE race for the next US president is on and promises to be historic.

It is not taking place until 2024 – but election fever is already gripping the nation. So who are the candidates?

Joe Biden won the presidential election in 2020, and will be hoping to win a second term in office

When are the US presidential elections?

The US presidential elections take place every four years.

On November 5, 2024, US voters will head to the polls to elect their next president and vice president.

The 2024 election will be the 60th quadrennial presidential election with a number of candidates gunning for the power seat.

It will also be the first time an election takes place under the electoral vote distribution which was determined by the 2020 census.

This resulted in one less electoral vote in California and New York, one more in Florida, and two more in Texas.

To win the election, a minimum of 270 votes out of the 538 electoral votes is required.

Who is in the running for US president?

Joe Biden

Joe Biden is the current President of the US and is the likely Democratic nominee for the 2024 presidential election.

He confirmed his bid for re-election in April 2023.

Alongside Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris will also once again serve as his running mate.

Biden is currently the top candidate to win the 2024 presidency despite being the oldest president in history.

According to an AP-Norc Center poll conducted in May 2023, it was found that just 33 per cent of American adults approved of his handling of the economy.

Ron DeSantis

Ronald Dion DeSantis is the 46th governor of Florida and a member of the Republican Party.

He was first elected to Congress in 2012 and then re-elected in 2014 and 2016 and was a member of the US House from 2012 to 2018.

DeSantis is another hot contender for presidency as he consistently polls second among Republican primary voters.

Donald Trump

Former US president Donald Trump hopes to make a return to office and is the top contender for the Republican party nomination.

Despite being embroiled in legal drama, Trump hopes to be successful in his re-election after his failed bid to overturn his 2020 election defeat.

He announced his presidential campaign in November 2022.

The businessman revealed he is pro-life and if elected will continue his hard line approach to immigration.

Violence against trans people and his anti-China agenda will also be at the forefront of his policies if re-elected.

Other candidates for the 2024 US Presidential elections include:

  • Doug Burgum is the governor of North Dakota and is a Republican.
  • Robert F Kennedy Jr is a lawyer and author and a Democrat.
  • Chris Christie is the former governor of New Jersey and is a Republican.
  • Marianne Williamson is an author and a Democrat.
  • Larry Elder is a conservative radio host and is a Republican.
  • Nikki Haley is the former ambassador to the United Nations and is a Republican.
