CORONATION Street fans are in shock after Carla Connor left the cobbles tonight.

The businesswoman – who is played by actress Alison King in the ITV soap – was pushed to the brink by Stephen Reid’s sick plan to spike her with LSD to induce another breakdown.

While Carla was sleeping, Stephen let himself into her flat and put the oven on in an effort to set it on fire and frame Carla.

Fortunately Roy arrived just in time to turn it off – but Carla was convinced she had put it on and forgot.

“I’m not a child, I’m worse than a child,” she said.

“What if you’d be on a night shift? If you’d have been asleep and I’d have turned the grill on, I could’ve burned this place down, I could’ve killed you.”

Accepting what everyone was saying, Carla said she needed help.

“I’m sorry,” she told Peter and Roy.

“It’s happening again, isn’t it? I don’t want to go back there. I’m scared. I’m a danger to myself, I’m a danger to you and you.

“I need some help. Help me.”

With Stephen officially having taken over at Underworld, Carla was warned that she had to avoid all possible stress and take a lengthy break from work.

She decided to go to a private clinic to help with her mental health.

As Roy asked if she was sure about going, she told him: “If I want to get better, I have to be, don’t I?

“I don’t want to let you go. I’ve got to do it. Goodbye.”

Peter drove her to the clinic but it’s clear Roy was having trouble accepting that Carla was really unravelling like last time.

And fans are devastated that Carla’s gone.

One wrote: “Please protect Carla at all costs or there will be a riot I’m sure.”

A second said: “This Carla storyline is really cruel. Please bring it to an end. Get rid of Steven asap”

Another simply wrote “Roy and Carla” followed by a broken heart emoji.
