Coronation Street actor Bill Roache, 91, has revealed that he must continue working to resolve his tax issues, which have led to a potential bankruptcy.

Roache, who has played the character Ken Barlow since 1960, has been formally petitioned by HMRC over outstanding tax payments. The veteran actor has confided in friends and family that he still relies on his six-figure salary from the soap opera to support himself.

Despite the financial challenges, Roache remains determined and has received unwavering support from the ITV soap's bosses. They have assured him that he has a job for life. However, the situation is causing concern for the 91-year-old, as the risk of bankruptcy weighs heavily on him.

A source close to Roache said, "Corrie [Coronation Street] have been great and are backing him to the hilt. He knows he has a job for life – and the thing is, he needs it now."

The source added that the tax issue has been ongoing for some time and is still quite shocking. Despite the difficulties, Roache is determined to sort out his affairs and is seeking the necessary advice.

In light of the situation, Roache has told friends that he has no plans to retire. Given the circumstances, he feels that he doesn't have much of a choice but to continue working. However, he remains content in his job.

The papers lodged at London's High Court on Tuesday listed Roache as the debtor and HMRC as the petitioner. This is not the first time Roache has faced bankruptcy, having previously experienced it in 1999.

A spokesperson for Coronation Street expressed their concern over Roache's financial situation but confirmed that he remains a beloved member of the cast with an ongoing contract.

HMRC stated that they take a supportive approach to customers with tax debts and only resort to bankruptcy as a last resort. They aim to help those who engage with them to resolve their debt.

Roache's spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.
