From Bad Films to EastEnders
Danny Dyer, the talented actor known for his role as Mick Carter in EastEnders, reveals his financial struggles after making a series of "bad films." Dyer, now 46, was left broke and barely had enough money for petrol when he landed his EastEnders role.
Rock Bottom and Resurrection
One of Dyer's films, called "Run For Your Wife," made a shocking £602 in its opening weekend. Reflecting on his difficult financial situation, Dyer admits, "I was on my a*se. I was f*****." He felt the weight of his bad film choices and descended into a partying lifestyle that took a toll on his soul.
Dyer recalls, "Where do you go from there? I couldn't put my kids through school. I f*cked it." However, a call from Dominic Treadwell Collins offered him a glimmer of hope.
A New Chapter and Unexpected Success
Treadwell Collins asked Dyer to meet him. Dyer barely had enough petrol money to get there, but he took the opportunity. Little did he know that this meeting would lead to a breakthrough.
The part Treadwell Collins offered him was that of an alpha male character in EastEnders who wears a pink dressing gown. His first storyline would involve his son coming out as gay, and he would have to show support and love. Dyer instantly connected with the role.
"I said 'wow you f****** get me.' I thought I'm going to come in and chase Phil about. But no," Dyer reveals. Instead, he was asked to take over the Queen Vic pub and become part of a family. The producers had no idea about his financial struggles.
A Parent's Journey
At the BFI event, Dyer also spoke about his daughter Dani's past relationships. He admits that he initially had reservations but has learned to accept that his children will make their own choices.
He discloses, "My Dani has brought home some f****** t****. Sitting at my table on a Sunday, eating my leg of lamb." However, he has softened his stance and now simply wants someone to worship the ground his daughter walks on.
