MILD-mannered and brainy Finn Barton was tragically killed off the ITV soap Emmerdale in October, 2017.

Less than six years since his exit, Emmerdale star Joe Gill has drastically changed, as noticed through his Instagram posts.

Joe Gill was known as Finn Barton on-screen

A role he has admitted is nothing like him

Fans of the long-running soap may remember him as shy, awkward and unlucky in love but there’s a lot more to Joe than his role as Finn.

While his character was not only known for his friendship with Victoria Sugden, Finn was also spotted with thick-rimmed glasses and a formal look pairing blazers and shirts.

Six years after his exit from the Yorkshire-based show, Joe has been seen going for a more casual look.

In an Instagram post, shared just in time for his 28th birthday celebrated on February 12 last year, Joe was seen enjoying a walk in the woods dressed in khaki trousers, a comfortable and thick coat paired with a beanie and a pair of walking boots.

Joe opts for a beard and longer curls – worlds away from Finn’s clean-shaven face and mop of hair.

On Mother’s Day in 2022, Joe shared another snap and celebrated by hugging his mother.

He could be seen with a shorter haircut but the same beard frames his face.

“Happy Mother’s Day, Mum. You’re an inspiration and an absolute warrior”, he captioned.

Joe has always made it clear that he was nothing like his on-screen character, which is the main reason he even accepted to portray Finn in Emmerdale.

He stated he had wanted to play someone “removed from himself” and was quick to go for the part when he learned Finn would have male love interests.

During his time in the programme, Finn’s storylines involved a date rape arc, a brief relationship with Kasim Sabet and tracking down his mother (and serial killer) Emma Barton.

Joe’s stint in Emmerdale ended in October, 2017, when Finn was accidentally shot by Emma.

This resulted in a fatal heart attack.

After appearing on stage between 2018 and 2019 to perform The Full Monty, Joe has kept away from the box but remains in the spotlight.

Since March 22 and until April 9, he is taking on the stage of the Alphabetti Theatre in Newcastle upon Tyne, as he performs in Camilla Whitehill’s play Mr Incredible.

He is also known to read books online to audiences.

Meanwhile, Emmerdale airs every weeknight from 7.30pm on ITV.
