LOVE is in the air for one young Weatherfield couple as they agree to take their relationship to the next level.

But nothing is ever really as it seems in Coronation Street and one half of the pair could be taking advantage of the other.

One surprising pair decide to get engaged next week in Coronation Street

Stephen Reid decides to move in with Elaine Metcalfe

But he also makes it clear he wants their engagement to be a secret – what is he up to?

Elaine Metcalfe (played by Paula Wilcox) has been desperate to catch Stephen Reid’s attention since he first came back to Weatherfield in 2022.

Sadly for her, the businessman portrayed by Canadian actor Todd Boyce has always seemed to hold her at arm’s length.

But in a surprising turn of events next week, the pair agree to buy the Redbank apartment together as flatmates.

Elaine has had her eye on the property for weeks but was devastated when she realised it was outside her budget.

When Stephen agrees to move in with her, Elaine is excited although she secretly wishes they were moving in together as a couple.

She gets a major shock when Stephen agrees to get engaged – but there’s a twist.

In scenes due to air on ITV, he tells Elaine he’d like them to keep their engagement a secret for the time being and just enjoy the moment.

While his personal life seems to be going well, particularly after his failed marriage with his first wife Gabrielle, Stephen’s professional ventures at the Underworld factory aren’t going as smoothly.

Carla Connor (Alison King) berates Stephen for pulling out of a presentation, leaving his niece Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) to carry the can.

The Underworld factory boss then makes it clear to Stephen he’s to have nothing more to do with the American deal from then on.

Stephen is seething and heads to the precinct, intent on buying more drugs with which he has been spiking Carla as payback for being demoted.

However, when two lads pocket his money and laugh in his face, Stephen sees red.

Unbeknownst to everyone in the cobbles, Stephen is hiding a killer secret.

While he’s been scheming to get his hands on some cash, he’s also shown he is capable of murder on two occasions.

In late 2022, once he realised he had been caught red-handed by Leo Thompkins, Stephen pushed the hunk off a railing in a blind rage after violently striking him.

Months later, when Teddy Thompkins figured out why his son was nowhere to be seen in Weatherfield or even in Canada, where he was said to have fled, Stephen had no choice but to strike again and kill Leo’s father.

With Elaine in the picture and Carla making his life difficult, could Stephen resort to murder for the third time?

Will the lads trying to steal from him pay the price?

Coronation Street airs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8pm on ITV.
