PC and Xbox players go crazy for new hit game Palworld – but it’s not without controversy

PC and Xbox gamers are absolutely hooked on Palworld, a brand-new video game that was released in early access on Friday.

The game has quickly soared to the top of the best-seller charts and within hours became the most-played title on the popular PC gaming platform Steam.

Palworld is an exciting new survival crafting game that has already attracted millions of players even before its full release.

The game introduces collectible Pals, creatures that assist players in building their bases and battling other Pals and bosses.

Palworld combines the gameplay of popular titles like Minecraft, Valheim, and Lego Fortnite with elements of monster-catching and battling found in the Pokémon series.

While initially described as 'Pokémon with guns', the early access version of Palworld has proven itself to be more of a survival game rather than a Pokémon clone.

As of now, over 1.5 million people are playing Palworld on Steam, making it the third most-played title in the history of the platform.

In addition to this number, many players are enjoying the game for free through Xbox Game Pass or purchasing it for Xbox Series X|S consoles.

The game's developer, Pocket Pair, announced on Monday that Palworld has already sold over 5 million copies in just 3 days.

In Palworld, players can team up with friends or explore the world solo, gather materials, construct their bases, create equipment, battle bosses, and capture mystical creatures called Pals.

Each Pal species possesses unique abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, and they assist players both in combat and with daily tasks at their bases.

Palworld's success did not come out of nowhere, as it was already one of the top five most wishlisted games on Steam prior to its launch.

However, the surge in players was even more significant than expected, causing the game's servers to struggle to meet the demand.

Despite the game's popularity, some players are not entirely impressed and have pointed out perceived similarities between Pals and Pokémon.

A number of Pokémon enthusiasts took to Twitter to accuse Pocket Pair of copying Pal designs and gameplay concepts from the Pokémon series.

While the monster-taming genre exists outside of the Pokémon games, some fans feel that Palworld borrows too heavily from the beloved series.

Users have shared side-by-side images of Pals and the Pokémon they believe they are based on.

Some have even suggested that the game may have used generative AI for certain designs, although there is no concrete evidence to support this claim.

The use of artificial intelligence is a controversial topic in the creative industries.

Many artists view AI as a threat to their livelihoods and a violation of their rights as creators.

Takuro Mizobe, the game director of Palworld and CEO of Pocket Pair, responded to these accusations by calling them "slanderous."

He took full responsibility for the game and explained that Palworld's production has been overseen by multiple individuals, including himself.

In a post on Twitter (in Japanese), Mizobe asked people to refrain from making such comments against the artists who worked on the game and mentioned that some tweets even included death threats.
