PlayStation to Delete Purchased Content from Consoles with No Refunds

Digital media is gaining popularity, but it comes with risks. When you buy digital content, you might not realize that you don't truly own it, but rather have a long-term rental. Hidden in the fine print, companies have the right to remove purchased digital content without explanation. This rarely happens, as it would damage their reputation. However, PlayStation has recently announced that this will happen to PS5 owners.

The Email that Revealed the Issue

Owners of PS5 consoles were alerted to this issue through an email that stated, "As of December 31, 2023, due to our content licensing arrangements with content providers, you will no longer be able to watch any of your previously purchased Discovery content and the content will be removed from your video library." This means that any TV shows purchased via Discovery will soon be deleted from your console, and no refund will be given.

Over 1k Seasons of TV Shows Affected

This change will impact more than 1,000 seasons of TV shows, primarily from popular reality TV programs. Shows like Say Yes to the Dress, Naked and Afraid, Cake Boss, and Mythbusters will all be removed from players' consoles. It's important to note that Sony did not make this decision; it was made by Warner Bros., which acquired Discovery last year.

Angry PlayStation Owners

PlayStation owners are understandably upset about this issue. One user on Twitter expressed their frustration, stating, "They should give them a refund. That's straight-up stealing." Another user raised concerns about the potential removal of games from their library. This announcement has left many worried about the fate of their extensive game collection.
