Solving the Resident Evil 8 DLC’s most fiendish puzzle

THINGS get quite tricky in the prison towards the end of Shadows of Rose.

Resident Evil 8’s DLC gives players roughly 3 to 4 hours of new story content, featuring the daughter of the main game’s protagonist, Ethan.

This puzzle in the prison will make you sweat.

She has strange powers thanks to her mutant parents, and she’ll need to put them to good use in this adventure.

Once you’ve got hold of all three masks you’re looking for, you’ll be kidnapped and thrown into a prison cell.

In the room are a much of mold cores – also called sclerotia – that the game’s evil merchant makes fake copies of.

In order to escape the room you need to identify the fakes and find the real cores, which isn’t as easy as it sounds.

We’ll tell you how to solve this puzzle without any guesswork and give you the solution.

If you’re struggling elsewhere in this game, then check out our guide to the Hall of Ablution puzzle too.

Counterfeit core prison puzzle solution

Your guardian, Michael, will do their best to write messages on the blank spots on the wall that points to the correct cores.

Note that you need to complete this puzzle under a time limit, so just pulling at random won’t do you any good.

Michael’s advice is useful, but if you need an extra bit of help, here are the locations of the three real cores.

The first is on the other side of the bars on the right side of the room. You should see four cores in a diamond, you want the bottom one.

The second is inside the prison cell, inside the broken wall. You want the largest of the cores but beware of the enemy that will spawn as you start to focus on it.

At this point, you won’t be able to move around very much, but thankfully the final core is on the ceiling, right in the centre.

Once you’ve got this core you’ll be free from the prison and able to leave.
