Record-Breaking Funding

Gaming is a massive industry, with blockbuster games often costing as much as Hollywood movies. However, one game has taken funding to a whole new level, raising over half a million dollars despite not being released yet. Star Citizen, which began development in 2010 and opened up to crowdfunding in 2012, has amassed an astonishing $650 million (£470 million) in the past 11 years.

The Most Expensive Add-On Yet

Star Citizen recently announced a new downloadable pack called Legatus 2953, which comes with a hefty price tag of $48,000 (£38,000). This add-on allows players to purchase a fleet of 175 in-game spaceships. The company has been selling a new Legatus fleet every year since 2018, with the original set costing $28,000. The price has since increased steeply, almost doubling the original amount.

No Clear Release Date

Despite the massive funding and years of development, Star Citizen still does not have a clear release date. Many early backers have lost hope of the game ever being launched. While certain parts of the game, known as "Modules," have been released, they fall short of the original promises made to backers.

Rising Investments

Despite the ongoing delays and unfulfilled promises, players continue to invest in Star Citizen. In 2023 alone, the project earned over $100 million (£78 million). While the sales figures for Legatus have not been officially announced, the fact that new sets are developed each year suggests that they do generate sales.

An Expensive Shortcut

Building a fleet like the one offered in the Legatus pack requires hundreds of hours of grinding to gather materials. However, purchasing the expensive package allows players to bypass this process. It seems that Star Citizen backers are willing to spend the money to skip the grind and unlock powerful in-game assets.
