BRITS should make the most of the current sunny and warm spell as another freezing cold snap is coming this way.

A “major Sudden Stratospheric Warming”(SSW) is “likely” to hit the UK towards the tail-end of February, the Met Office has warned.

Wintry conditions are expected towards the end of February

Parts of the UK could see wintry conditions with some snow and temperatures possibly plunging as low as -11C with the cold snap lasting for around 10 days into March.

Prof Adam Scaife, Head of Long-Range Forecasting at the Met Office, said: “There is now over 80 per cent chance of a major SSW occurring.

“Although the impact will become clearer nearer the time, any effect on UK weather is most likely to occur in late February and March.”

An SSW caused 2018’s “Beast from the East” which also started in late February.

However, the Met Office also said the cold snap was not guaranteed as there was an SSW in 2019 although this had little impact on the UK’s weather.

Today though it will remain cloudy across much of central, eastern and southern England.

Elsewhere, there will be some pleasant weather once the cloud cover breaks.

For most parts it will remain mild with temperatures around average for this time of year.

Overnight, it will stay cloudy cross south and east UK, with a chance of some breaks in south later leading to a few fog patches.

As the working week gets underway, it will stay dry with variable cloud and sunny spells although there could be some foggy patches first thing.

It will be breezier in the north and west.

Temperatures could hit 13C in the south and 11C in the north.

Looking further ahead in the coming week, rain is forecast to spread west on Wednesday but remain dry in the far south west.

More rain is expected mainly in the west on Thursday but will remain dry and bright in the north.

The colder conditions are expected to arrive around February 25 and last into the early part of march.

A Met Office forecaster said: “A period of colder or much colder temperatures remains a small possibility, bringing widespread wintry conditions.

The cold snap is forecast to last into March, the Met Office predicts
