RETIRED Olympian and Dancing on Ice star Greg Rutherford has shared an update on his operation, following the nasty injury he sustained while competing on the ITV show.

The 37-year-old badly hurt himself after he slid through the legs of the professional skaters Brendyn Hatfield and Colin Grafton and tore his abdominal muscles, prompting him to pull out of the show just ahead of the final.

He shared a picture of himself on social media post-surgery with the caption: “Thanks for all the lovely messages.”

Indeed Greg’s wife Susie Verill revealed that he’s well enough to come home. She shared a a reel of her with the couple’s daughter Daph, who was in tow but out of shot, saying “On our way to pick up daddy.”

Hours before his surgery, Rutherford, whose skating partner was 4X Olympian Vanessa James, appeared on Instagram stories telling his almost 200,000 followers about the “horribly painful” injury, almost 14 days after the accident.

“I’ve been a bit busy and obviously just recovering from the initial injury before I have the surgery that I hadn’t actually got round to talking about it. Long story short, I leapt through the legs of Brendyn and Colin and managed to tear all of my abs as well as herniate. So I effectively gave myself a C-section.”

He later filmed himself in the hospital half an hour before his surgery, confessing to being a “little bit nervous” and that he will have a “new and bigger scar”.

Now that the surgery is done, the dad- of-three says he’s excited to get back to being fit again, but will be required to rest for a while.

He said: “Surgeons really happy with his work and I’m excited to get fit again. But for the next few days I’m going to be very sore and doing a lot of nothing.”

The final saw former Coronation Street actor Ryan Thomas crowned as the winner.

Rutherford is best known for winning Olympic gold in the Long Jump at the London 2012 Olympics. Since then he has appeared on Strictly Come Dancing in 2016 and Celebrity Masterchef in 2019.
