LOVE Island could this year see its first THROUPLE – and bosses are ready for it.

There has been increased interest in three-way relationships like that recently enjoyed by David Haye, Una Healy and Sian Osborne.

Love Island fans could be set to see their first throuple appear on the show

The new series – hosted by Maya Jama – kicks off on Monday

Over recent years there has been a growing call for Love Island to show a more progressive attitude to dating.

Asked whether bosses would allow a throuple to compete, executive producer Mike Spencer said: “I think we’d have to look at how that would affect the recouplings but yeah if you wanna be a throuple, that’s very in right now, isn’t it?

“I’m just trying to think of the logistics of voting, it wouldn’t really work. Maybe update the app?!”

He laughed: “It’s not Throuple Island!”

Since its conception, Love Island has featured just one same sex coupling, when Katie Salmon and Sophie Gradon made history when they paired up in series two.

The relationship did not last and Sophie left the villa two days later.

Mike said: “The show format is obviously more open to bisexual islanders, it’s not a same sex production as such.

“I think it’s a really tricky one. I think the format has dictated that and we’re not going to change that at the moment.

“There’s other productions that ITV make that cover more, same sex relationships.

“I think we’ll just continue to make this brilliant show and focus on that. And I think the public really enjoy it, still love it.”

There’s been a real push for diversity of all types on the ITV2 show – including a need to embrace different ethnicities, disabilities and body types.

Mike added: “We obviously always strive to be as diverse inclusively as we can.

“We always ask everyone to come forward, come for your audition and we’ll just keep striving to be as diverse and inclusive as possible.”

Love Island returns on Monday 5 June at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
