NINETEEN bank branches are set to close their doors for the final time in December, according to LINK, leaving customers in England, Wales, and Scotland without access to physical banking services. The closures come as more customers opt for online banking, and banks and building societies look to cut costs.

Barclays, Lloyds, Bank of Scotland, Virgin Money, Halifax, and NatWest Affected

Barclays will be closing 11 branches, while Lloyds will close one and the Bank of Scotland will close three. Virgin Money, Halifax, and NatWest will also be shutting down two, one, and one branch respectively. This follows a wave of closures this year, as hundreds of building society and bank branches have already closed.

Impact on Customers and Alternatives

Although the majority of banking customers now prefer online services, the closures may pose challenges for elderly individuals in rural areas without internet access. However, customers have options. Basic banking tasks can be carried out at the nearest Post Office, although services like applying for loans or opening new accounts are not available. Some banks offer mobile banking services through buses or designated locations like village halls or libraries. Customers are advised to contact their bank to inquire about available services and upcoming visits to their area.
