Unanswered Questions: The Search for a Gas Supplier

A couple in Tamworth near Birmingham, Lee Haynes and Jo Woodley, have recently received a shock: an £11,000 bill for 18 years' worth of gas usage. However, they claim that the responsibility lies with their unknown gas supplier, as they did everything they could to find out who it was when they first moved into their home in 2005.

A Frustrating Quest for Answers

When Lee and Jo moved into their home, they immediately began trying to determine who their gas supplier was. They reached out to the National Grid and their housing association, but both were unable to provide any information. They even contacted the energy ombudsman, who advised them to wait for their supplier to contact them. However, months went by with no communication.

A Surprise Bill and a Lack of Clarity

After years of waiting, Lee and Jo were shocked to receive a gas bill totaling £10,824.87, covering their entire time in the house. What's more, the bill came from gas distributor Cadent without any indication of who the money was owed to. The couple were given just 30 days to pay the invoice.

Cadent's Response

Cadent, while not a gas supplier themselves, explained that they have an obligation to investigate and recover the cost of any gas used outside of a supplier contract. They emphasized that they have a specialized team available to assist customers in these situations.

Lee and Jo are now left to navigate the situation and resolve the issue of the unexpected gas bill.
