Passing on savings

Home furnishings store Dunelm has reduced prices on 1,000 products since the summer, as it aims to pass on cost reductions to customers. The move comes as retailers have been hit by rising shipping costs due to the pandemic. Dunelm, which has 182 shops across the UK, has been gaining market share by offering products ranging from £3 bed sheets to £56 alternatives. The retailer has also expanded its range of "winter warmers" in response to customers looking for ways to cut energy bills.

Consumer price inflation falls

According to official figures, consumer price inflation in the UK is currently at 4.6%, down from 6.7% in September. Dunelm's price reductions will provide relief to customers during the colder months, as they navigate rising energy costs. The retailer has seen increased sales in products such as electric blankets, hoodies, draught excluders, and thermal curtains.

Delivering Joy campaign

Dunelm is also continuing its "Delivering Joy" campaign, which allows customers to donate presents to children and adults in need. So far, almost 88,000 gifts have been donated to causes in local communities. The retailer's CEO, Nick Wilkinson, emphasized the importance of physical stores in the homewares sector, as customers value the ability to see and feel products before making a purchase.

Why physical stores matter

Wilkinson explained that many customers prefer to visit stores in order to check the color of curtains, feel bedding, and sit on furniture. Physical stores also provide practical and decor advice, opportunities for recycling, and local community connections. Even major online retailers like Amazon recognize the value of physical stores and are opening their own brick-and-mortar locations. Dunelm's growth in store openings reflects the continuing demand for physical shopping experiences in the homewares sector.
