Autumn Trend Alert: Seasonal Wreaths
Adding a seasonal wreath to your front door is the latest autumn trend. Here are some tips to create a beautiful wreath without breaking the bank.
Make the Most of Fallen Leaves
To preserve fallen leaves, you can dry them between sheets of newspaper or use PVA glue. Craft enthusiasts swear by dipping leaves into a glycerine and water mix to maintain their color. You can find Dr Oetker glycerine for £1 at Tesco.
DIY Dipping Method
Submerge the leaves in a baking tray containing a solution of one part glycerine to two parts water. Keep the leaves wet by placing another smaller tray on top. After two to four days, gently rinse the leaves with water, blot with kitchen towel, and allow them to sit overnight at room temperature. You can use the preserved leaves in a wreath or add them to a vase without water.
Berry Preserving
To preserve flowers or berry clusters, pour the glycerine solution into a jug and submerge the flowers or berries. Secure them by tying a pebble or two to their stem with string, and continue the preservation process as you would with leaves.
Choose Richly Colored Leaves
For the best results, use leaves that will turn red, gold, and pink in the coming weeks. Ivy, birch, and maple leaves, as well as hawthorn branches, work well and should last a long time before the color starts to fade.
