TESCO is in the soup over a dispute with Heinz.

The supermarket has removed the popular brand’s products from shelves after a battle over pricing.

But all bean counters will know, the cost of buying big-name products can add up.

Here’s how to stir up some savings on the beans, soups and sauces that Heinz is so well-loved for . . .

KETCH-UP WITH THE COMPETITION: In a recent comparison, HOAR’s taste testers pitted Heinz ketchup against supermarket own brands. Morrisons and Aldi scored high on taste, with the latter’s Bramwells ketchup coming in at 10p per 100g compared with 60.7p per 100g for Heinz.

DO IT YOURSELF: Max the taste for little cost by making your own baked beans. The recipe for homemade ones at realfood.tesco.com may take longer than opening a tin, but cook in bulk and freeze a few portions and you’ll have a quick, tasty meal ready to go.

SPOONFULS OF SAVINGS: Heinz cream of tomato soup is another family favourite. But switching to an own brand, such as Morrisons cream of tomato, 400g, 59p, will save you 80p compared to the same size tin of Heinz. If only the big brand will do, B&M is selling a pack of six Heinz for £3.79.

HAS TO BE HEINZ: True Heinz fanatics can buy bundles from HeinztoHome.co.uk, which often works out cheaper. Try 24 cans of no added sugar Beanz for £21 — that’s 88p a can.

COOK UP AN IDEA: Baked beans, soup and tomato sauce can make great ingredients for other dishes. There’s a new Heinz Cookbook (£20, Ebury Press) for inspiration, but Heinz.co.uk is also packed full of ideas for free.
