Free School Meals – Up to £500 a Year
If you're claiming certain benefits, such as Universal Credit, JSA, and Child Tax Credit, your child may be eligible for free school meals. The amount you receive depends on your location and can range from around £2.15 to £2.50 per day, or approximately £400-£500 per school year. Apply through your local authority or contact the school directly.
Free School Transport for Low-Income Families – Worth £100s
Low-income families and those receiving certain benefits may qualify for free school transport. This includes children under eight with no safe route home and those with special educational needs or disabilities. Each local council has its own system, such as a free bus pass or a seat on a school bus. Check your local council's website to see if your children are eligible.
Free Bus and Train Travel – Worth £100s
Transport for London allows all kids aged 0-10 to travel free on buses, and those aged 11-15 can travel for free with a Zip Oyster photocard. In Scotland, anyone under 22 can travel free on buses with a Free Bus Pass. Other bus operators may offer free travel for children under five. Check with your local operator to see if your children qualify.
Free Childcare – Worth £1,000s
Parents of three and four-year-olds can claim 570 hours of free childcare per year, while some may qualify for 30 hours a week. From April 2024, working parents of two-year-olds can access 15 hours of free childcare. Eligibility criteria include being in work, earning the national living wage for at least 16 hours a week, and earning less than £100,000 a year. Apply through a childcare provider or the government's website. Additional childcare costs can be covered by the childcare element of Universal Credit.
