Greggs, the popular high street bakery chain, is implementing new measures to combat theft. In an effort to deter thieves from pinching their doughnuts, Greggs will no longer display them in boxes for customers to freely access. Instead, the doughnuts will now be kept behind the counter and handed to customers after they have made a purchase. This decision comes after a recent surge in thefts at a Greggs store in North London, where the drinks fridges had to be locked.
Protecting the Sweet Treats
Martyn James, a member of the Sun Squeeze Team and consumer champion, expressed his disappointment at the need to hide away items like cakes and doughnuts due to theft. He called for stronger action against these opportunistic criminals who are causing trouble for both employees and customers. However, Greggs has not provided any official comment regarding these security changes.
A Growing Problem
The situation at the Greggs store in Archway, North London, sheds light on the ongoing issue of shoplifting. According to a staff member, thefts occur on a daily basis, leading to the decision to padlock the drinks fridge. This was done in an attempt to prevent thieves from stealing the bottles and selling them elsewhere. The staff member further noted that thieves will take anything that is not securely fastened.
