The much-loved M&S department store in Birmingham city centre's High Street is set to close its doors for good tomorrow, marking the end of an era for shoppers. But fear not, because a brand new store is opening in Birmingham's Bullring on Tuesday, offering an exciting new shopping experience.

More closures expected

This closure is just one of many expected over the next five years, as M&S undergoes a transformation. The retailer plans to close a number of stores while simultaneously opening new flagship M&S stores and Foodhalls in major UK cities.

Exciting new openings

This year alone, cities like Leeds and Liverpool have welcomed new M&S stores, and in November, there are nine more openings planned, including Birmingham, Uckfield, Lakeside, Earlsfield, Barnsley, and Trafford Centre.

Future expansion

But the expansion doesn't stop there. M&S has plans to open or refurbish stores in five more locations in the coming months, including Camberley, Handforth, Newcastle, Wrexham, and Manchester Trafford Centre. This is all part of M&S' ambitious goal to become the UK's leading omnichannel retailer.

Store rotation programme

M&S' store rotation programme is at the heart of its ambition. The retailer aims to transition from 247 stores to 180 higher quality, higher productivity full-line stores that offer a range of products, while also opening over 100 bigger and better food sites, by 2028.

Investment in the future

With plans to invest £480 million in new stores and expand its digital offering, M&S is determined to thrive in today's competitive retail landscape. The retailer will also roll out click-and-collect to 130 stores across the UK, making shopping even more convenient for customers.

Other retailers on the move

M&S isn't the only retailer looking to expand. Primark has recently opened a new shop in Salisbury and completed a refurbishment on its store in Edinburgh's Princes Street. Bargain retailer Poundland has also opened dozens of new sites, offering customers even more options for affordable shopping.

Festive cheer from M&S

And speaking of M&S, the retailer's first Christmas advert has arrived, featuring well-known TV and movie stars. It's sure to get you into the holiday spirit!
