Stocking up on Christmas essentials

Nearly one in five adults have already filled their cupboards with Christmas food, taking advantage of sales and discounts. The most common items to be stockpiled include chocolate, wine, Christmas pudding, and stuffing. A poll of 2,000 adults who celebrate Christmas found that 39% would buy all their festive food months in advance if there was no risk of it going off.

Reducing festive outgoings

Over a third of respondents (35%) are looking to cut back on their Christmas expenses compared to last year, with the same percentage expressing concerns about the cost of their Christmas meal this year. To help with this, Aldi has introduced a "Christmas Price Lock" on key food staples, ensuring that prices of turkey, pigs in blankets, Christmas puddings, and festive vegetables will remain the same as in 2022.

Popular items to cut back on

As people aim to reduce their expenditure, the survey found that the main foods that people are willing to cut back on or remove altogether include pigs in blankets (27%), roast potatoes (27%), and even turkey (28%). However, despite this, turkey (26%), roast potatoes (18%), and pigs in blankets (11%) are considered essential items that people couldn't do without this Christmas.

Smaller gatherings and uninviting guests

To further reduce costs, one in five respondents are planning on having a smaller Christmas Day meal by inviting fewer people. Some are even considering uninviting themselves from Christmas celebrations to save money for their loved ones. According to the poll, aunties and uncles are the most likely to be uninvited (15%), followed by mother-in-law (12%) and father-in-law (11%).

The Aldi Christmas Price Lock

Aldi's communications director, Richard Thornton, stated that the company wants to help its customers enjoy the Christmas dinner they deserve with their loved ones. That's why Aldi has introduced the Aldi Christmas Price Lock, ensuring that key food staples remain affordable throughout the festive period.

Top items already stocked up on

According to the poll, the top items that Brits have already stocked up on for Christmas include tins of chocolate, wine, Christmas pudding, stuffing, nuts, Prosecco, cream crackers, mince pies, gravy, and champagne.
