A leisure centre in Newquay, Cornwall, is making the difficult decision to close one of its swimming pools in an effort to reduce energy costs. The closure, which will be in effect from the end of October until Easter 2024, is part of an initiative by GLL, the social enterprise that operates the centre, to save money amid soaring bills.

Winter Pool Closure

The pool that will be temporarily closed is the family-orientated tropical themed fun pool, which includes features such as a bubbly volcano, happy hippo flume, and various slides. However, the 25m pool will remain open during the winter months, ensuring that visitors can still enjoy swimming activities.

Impact on Customers

School activities will not be affected by the closure, and GLL assures that there will still be plenty of availability for customers during the winter season. Fitness swimmers and learn-to-swim members will still have access to the facilities, and there will also be weekend family swimming sessions, inflatable sessions, and children's party sessions.

Cost Savings and Environmental Responsibility

GLL expects to save approximately £30,000 by closing the pool until next year. The annual heating cost for Newquay Leisure World is currently estimated at £300,000. James Curry, GLL's head of service for Cornwall, explains that the decision is driven by the high maintenance costs of the building and the recent tripling of energy costs.

Curry emphasizes the importance of sustainability and states that running two pools over the colder months is not a viable or responsible option. By operating more efficiently, the leisure centre aims to do its part for the environment while still providing adequate services to its customers.

Looking Ahead

While the closure of the swimming pool may pose a temporary inconvenience, GLL is confident that it is a necessary step to ensure the long-term sustainability of Newquay Leisure World. The centre remains committed to offering a range of activities and facilities for residents and visitors to enjoy.
